Tips and tricks to better your pics

Some advice and tricks from folks in the know to better your wildlife photography.

Remember before clicking.

  • Remember “ISA” – ISO – Speed – Aperture, before taking a shot look at these in the camera to ensure you are set up right for the shot you want to take.
  • Remember heat haze and long lenses, on hot days use your big lenses for subjects in the shade and near to you

Tricks in the field

  • Bokeh – getting smooth, diffused backrounds:
    • Your subject is near the camera
    • The greater the distance of what is behind the subject, the better the bokeh
    • The faster the lens, the better
    • Shoot wide open
    • The longer the lens the better

 

  • Freezing subjects
    • Make sure your shutter speed is as high as possible
      • Small birds wings move faster than large birds
    • Birds take off into the wind
    • Learn to track birds with subjects like Egyptian geese

 

  • Avoid shooting birds with a white or blue background
  • Try and be level with your subject, make much better pictures
  • Shoot longer bursts, there are better chances of getting a great shot
  • Make sure you have good support, support your lens, especially with longer lenses, don’t put all the weight on the camera
