- Remember “ISA” – ISO – Speed – Aperture, before taking a shot look at these in the camera to ensure you are set up right for the shot you want to take.
- Remember heat haze and long lenses, on hot days use your big lenses for subjects in the shade and near to you
Tricks in the field
- Bokeh – getting smooth, diffused backrounds:
- Your subject is near the camera
- The greater the distance of what is behind the subject, the better the bokeh
- The faster the lens, the better
- Shoot wide open
- The longer the lens the better
- Freezing subjects
- Make sure your shutter speed is as high as possible
- Small birds wings move faster than large birds
- Birds take off into the wind
- Learn to track birds with subjects like Egyptian geese
- Make sure your shutter speed is as high as possible
- Avoid shooting birds with a white or blue background
- Try and be level with your subject, make much better pictures
- Shoot longer bursts, there are better chances of getting a great shot
- Make sure you have good support, support your lens, especially with longer lenses, don’t put all the weight on the camera
